The harmful effects of plastic-use have been circulated throughout the world and are now at the forefront of every corporate agenda.
Each year, at least 8 million tonnes of plastics filter their way into world’s oceans that are the equivalent of dumping the contents of one garbage truck every minute. Subsequently, the world has been unified by its’ concern of the environment and how to best combat and reduce the damage done.
Countries such as Australia and Bangladesh have banned or have imposed taxes on the usage of poly bags. Governments in Europe have declared a total ban on single use plastics by 2030 and other nations are likely to follow.
Despite countries’ best intentions, they have failed to provide any suitable alternatives. The only available alternatives are largely composed of petroleum-based plastic that have poor biodegradable properties and therefore misrepresent them as being biodegradable. This is unfortunate as it undermines consumer confidence in alternatives. There are a select few products composed of natural materials such as potato or cornstarch. However, while environmentally friendly, they falter in terms of strength and dyeing abilities that hinders their commercial use on a world scale.
As a result, we have identified and plan to highlight alternative viable ecological solutions that aim to reduce plastic consumption and may ultimately assist in phasing out plastic all together.
Our product is referred to as the Sonali Bag, comprised of Jute and other highly biodegradable components resulting in a truly environmental-friendly alternative to plastic. Bangladesh is one of the top producers of Jute around the world producing 1.3 trillion of Jute per year. Dr. Mubarak Ahmad Khan and his research team invented the product in 2015. Prior to this invention, he was awarded several national and international awards including the Bangladesh Academy of Science Gold Medal awards in 2010 for his remarkable contribution to the scientific community.
Dr Mubarak completed his Ph.D. in Radiation and Polymer Chemistry and is the author of about several hundred publications and a patent. At present he is regarded as the top scientist in the Jute sector all over the World.
The advantages of Sonali are numerous and include but not limited to the following:
a) It is 100% biodegradable and decomposes in soil within 3 months; and
b) It is water resistant between 6 – 8 hours; and
c) It is 1.5 x stronger than a normal polythene bag; and
d) It is malleable, making it ideal for all types of packaging; and
e) It is environmentally friendly; and
f) It is extremely time and cost effective by dramatically reducing the need for recycling and waste management; and
Sonali bag is not only be used to reduce the plastic waste but also it reduces air pollution. Jute is not only biodegradable but it also prevents carbon dioxide emission. It is reported that one hectare of jute plants absorb 15 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and emits 11 tons of oxygen during its life span on 120 days.
Sonali bag is totally biodegradable and water resistant for 6-8 hours. It showed complete biodegradability within 3 months of soil burial. Due to its biodegradable properties, the cost-saving in recycling and recycling management can be dramatically reduced.
Sonali bag can be used as packaging material and it is 1.5 times stronger than normal polythene bag. The main reason it is… feasible packaging alternative since it is made.
from Jute. Bangladesh is one of the top producers of jute around the world. Bangladesh produces 1.3 trillion of jute per year as per the report in September 2017 Worldlast.com.
